Launching
a community newspaper
Vision is the result of an intense process of team-building, a network of partners, and an understanding of the needs and resources of the school and the community. Many meetings took place to produce the project plan and to obtain start-up funding. Design and content fell into place over a series of trial issues. Then a government grant allowed the purchase of computers, software and a digital camera and the printing of a 11"x15" tabloid format on newsprint. The elementary schools and high school ensure free distribution to English-speaking families. Several other target drop-off points at churches, stores, and the 55-plus Centre place 3,000 copies into the hands of readers each month.

The
creators of Vision
At left, Elspeth Butler of Lery has served as a fund-raiser, tutor, news gatherer and inspiration to the fledgling paper.
Lynne Donovan, left, was the vision behind Vision. While volunteering at Billings as Community Liaison, she obtained funding and was hired as the first Project Manager and Editor.
Phil Norton shares his background in photography and journalism with the students. He left his Montreal office job at The Gazette to join Vision.
Christine Wormald, above, is the desktop publishing tutor who guided the students in computer graphics and ensures delivery of the final design to the printer.

Others who have helped Vision: Howard Simpkin (former school board director-general), Norm Woods (HSB prinicipal), Elsie Salter (English teacher for first Journalism class 2003), and David Wright (school commissioner and publisher of The Townships Sun).
